Mavericks Channel Litter

I thought the Chopes channel action was crazy, look at the flotilla during Saturdays run at Mavericks. As seen from coast guard chopper 1.

Mavericks surf contest set to run tomorrow

The Mavericks big wave contest is set to run tomorrow Saturday January 12. Look for the live webcast brought to you by Myspace?

It looks like the Nelscott content may be missing some tow teams.

Heat one looks like this:

Nelscott tow-in surfing event set to go this weekend

Oregon buoy 46002 is showing 19 feet at 15 seconds with a strong south wind so the event start may be pushed to this weekend.

Surfing event organizers gave 48 hours notice Wednesday to dozens of top
tow-in surfers, who today are making their way to Oregon for the third
annual Nelscott Reef Tow In Classic in Lincoln City.

The competition will begin Friday, when the weather forecast calls for huge
waves that will build through the day. Competition will continue Saturday
and Sunday.

Should conditions fall short of those predicted, the start of the event
could be moved to Saturday or Sunday.

Mick Fanning and Joel Parkinson Surfing Nias

I think this video is pretty old, 2006. It looks like it was taken from a contest but I can't figure out why those two would be in a contest at Nias in 2006? Maybe it isn't even Mick and Parko doesn't matter, Nias is the star in this one.

Mavericks December 4th 2007

"By 10 am, word is Ghost Trees is firing, seeing 70-foot faces in the sun. Confirmation isn't possible—no one who committed to the three-hour drive south to Pebble Beach is interested in seeing all the tow teams milling around Mavericks suddenly crash their party. Meanwhile, occasional Jet Ski recon missions discover a few surfers in zero visibility. This isn't what the world's elite big wave riders want to face in a rising swell that have all the possibilities of the biggest Mavs ever." [source: Mavs Mayhem by Steve Lawrence]

Dave Rastovich Firsthand

I was going to just post bits and pieces of this but figured it's all good so... This bit from Fuel's show Firsthand puts Rasta on all kinds of insane Dick Van Straalen designs. Blacked out quads, a nine foot fish and some twinney he pulled out of a mates moms closet. There are also some bits on "Life Like Liquid" and Surfers for Cetaceans, check it out.

Save Trestles PSA - California Coastal Commission

This is something we have to get behind! Trestles is the last piece of coastal open space in Southern California. Sure it's a crowded mess but that doesn't mean it isn't worth saving. Save Trestles

Surfer are not professional athletes after all.

For the past five or six years the industry has been pushing hard to get us to believe that surfers are actually professional athletes and for a while there I was actually starting to believe them. Rob Machado set me straight in this great 20 minute piece from Fuel TV's Firsthand. Got love the Mob. The guy has got it dialed; wake up, surf all day, kiss the kids and go to bed. I miss Cardiff.

Lilliputian Perfection

Perfect mini barrels. These mini boat wake generated setups are amazing and the cinematography is beautiful.

Dave Johnson's Progressive Surfboards

My first custom shape was a Progressive. Dave's boards run a bit to thick through the nose for my tastes but he is a classic guy. I am surprised he didn't jump on the retro bandwagon, it seems he is content being the low coast shaper. The second half of the clip gets a bit remedial and can be safely skipped.
