Kelly Slaters Last Heat Ever?

This may just be the rummer mill spinning again but it looks like eight time ASP World Tour champion Kelly Slater is calling it quits.

"The 35-year-old was extremely disappointed after the heat and has booked himself onto the next flight out of Chile to return the United States.

It's believed Slater has no interest in contesting the tour's next event in South Africa and has served his final professional event."

This from The Age "Slater Tipped to Retire"

Watch Slater duck and weave through his last heat against Australian Dean Morrison.

Glacier Surfing Looks Super Heavy

An excerpt from DeepwaterFilms -- "As an avid surfer myself, I was enthralled with the consistent perfection of this wave; a perfect 'right-hander', traveling up to 200 yards. And this wave was not like the river waves I had seen before, such as those created by tidal bores, or the standing waves that occur in river rapids. This wave was big; up to 20-30 feet in height. It had immense power, and when it hit the submerged "reef", which was only 18" deep in some places, it jacked up and threw a 'heavy barrel'.

The wave itself was perfect, but the safety conditions were not. Icy waters, strong currents, and the danger of ice projectiles (some as large as Volkswagens) made paddle surfing into this wave a suicidal mission."

Jack Johnson Surfing

Jack Johnson surfing to his own tunes in these clips from the Malloy brothers "a broke
down melody". This film is beautiful, if you don't have it run out and get it.

ASP World Tour Arica Day 5

RIP CURL PRO SEARCH Arica, Chile. I am watching Dean Morrison beat Kelly Slater right now, but for some reason I can't help but wish that RipCurl had sent the boys back to Mexico. Good on ya Dingo!

Next Stop on the Men's ASP World Tour Arica, Chile

This short promo video from Rip Curl gives you a bit of location and background information regarding the wave the boys will be surfing in Arica, Chile. The boy's at aspworldtour.com are calling it the South America Pipe and have this to say about the mutant slab.

"The right looks to do it all in one heaving bowl but the left definitely offers those come from behind overlapping bowls that Andy, Kelly, Bruce and the Hobgoods absolutely revel in. The place looks pretty fun at 5-6’, but apparently things can turn a tad nasty beyond this comfort zone. It tends to break on the same ledge so one can imagine the arena shrinking, ala Waimea Bay, considerably on a day of consequence."

Reflections on Santa Barbara

Some of the best years of my life were spent in Sana Barbara. This little project features a few of my favorite spots, sand bar and little rincon. I like to think the little chest high left featured at the end is my favorite depressions peak, we used to call it "our beach."
